GF Restaurant Reviews

Il Fornello

Il Fornello is another Italian restaurant that offers both gluten free pizza and pasta.  They have multiple locations throughout the Toronto area (listed below).  Il Fornello is a very nice restaurant that you can bring the family or a date, the staff is very friendly and the service is excellent.  Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the gluten free pasta and pizza.

Daniel and I decided to share a pasta and pizza dish.  We ordered the Penne Capri (grilled chicken, mushrooms, lemon, tomato, spinach, garlic and grana padano – a better tasting Parmesan we were told) and the Quattro Stagioni Pizza (tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, salami, artichoke hearts, green olives and mushrooms).  The pizza crust was very good – a thin crust that tastes nothing like gluten free at all.  We should have known from the name and description of the pizza, however, that each quarter would have a separate ingredient (i.e. 1/4 artichoke hearts, 1/4 salami, etc.)  This made the pizza very boring and would have been much better mixed together into the entire pizza.  One positive and negative to the pizza was that the server told us that the pizza would not be cut due to the risk of cross contamination with cutting their regular pizzas.  However, it was very difficult to cut this pizza on our own using a steak knife.  I’m not sure why they wouldn’t have a few pizza cutters labelled “gluten free” in the kitchen to help the process.  The Penne Capri had very little taste to it and was quite oily.

I would definitely choose another Italian restaurant that offers gluten free pizza and pasta (i.e. Bar Mercurio or Villa Restaurant) before making a trip to Il Fornello.

My Rating:

  • Taste: 2/5
  • Gluten Free Options: 4/5
  • Price: $12 – $19 for pizza or pasta dish
  • Server Knowledge: 5/5
  • Other: gluten free pasta costs an extra $1.25 and gluten free pizza crust costs an extra $3.25 versus the gluten version
