Gluten Free Products

M&M Meat Stores

I have been inspired by a brave group of individuals who have decided to eliminate gluten from their diets for the month of January.  I have been following the Gluten Free January’s group on Facebook and enjoying their words of encouragement to each other and their success with trying out new gluten free recipes.  I know that starting out on a gluten free diet can be difficult and I am cheering on all of the participants to get through this challenge.

When starting out on a gluten free diet, it always helps to have some ready-made meals and side dishes on hand to help make meal preparation a bit easier.  On those days when I don’t feel like cooking, I rely on the gluten free M&M Meat Shops products that are very easy to make – just take them out of the freezer and pop them in the oven.  While M&M does not have a gluten free section on their website, the stores are usually able to provide you with a print-out of their gluten free product options.

  1. I’ve been to M&M many times and they are so uninformed about gluten. I’ve asked them what they have that is gluten free and they have not provided me with a list of products.
I wonder if this is new? I am surprised that they have so many choices.

    1. That’s too bad. I guess because they are franchises, some may not be as aware as other stores. I have noticed that some of the items that came up on this list do contain gluten. For example, their chicken fried rice was listed as gluten free, but it has soya sauce with wheat. So I would definitely double check on the package before buying to make sure there is no gluten. But from my experience, the products listed above do not contain gluten.

  2. I purchased the fall of the bone baby back ribs and have them in the oven as we speak! I am a little concerned thought after furhter investigating the ingredients list. They have “modified corn starch” “flavours” and “smoke” on the list. These usually are hidden gluten containing culprits. I wonder how diligent the company is for ensuring these ingredients are in fact gluten free? Has anyone had a reaction?

    1. I hope you like them! It’s definitely smart to double check on the ingredients. I know that the modified corn starch is safe (as long as it’s not modified ‘food’ starch). There is talk about Health Canada working on revising it’s labelling requirements, similar to the US, where all major food allergens must be indicated on the food label, which will make label checking a lot easier. I have never had an adverse reaction to this product and believe it is gluten free. But it never hurts to double check with the company. I have done this with a couple of M&M items in the past and the company seems to be pretty knowledgeable about gluten.

  3. Be careful! Many of the products listed contain soy… soy quite often has a lot of gluten in it from cross contamination. If you are celiac, double check the product at the counter, if it has soy, avoid it.

  4. All I want to know is if their meat and poultry have MSG in them. Can’t find anything on their website if they do or don’t. Help!!
