Teriyaki Meat Balls

This recipe has been passed down from my grandma to my mom and now to me.  Whenever I make this dinner, I am reminded of the fun family dinners in my house in Ottawa.  My mom would always have to double the sauce in this recipe so that my brother could drown the meat balls with sauce.  We all loved this meal and I hope the Emily will enjoy it just as much as me.  Unfortunately, we haven’t started off very well – Emily fed her two meat balls to Jerry at dinner tonight.

Ingredients (makes about 40 meat balls)

Meat Balls:

  • 1/4 cup tamari
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 2 cups gluten free bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 kg ground beef
  • 3 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp tamari
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Mix tamari, water, sugar, garlic powder and ginger in a small bowl.  Let stand for 10 minutes
  3. Break up meat and mix with bread crumbs.  Add sauce and mix by hand
  4. Shape into balls.  Heat oil in pan and brown on all sides.  Place meat balls on a paper towel to soak up any extra grease
  5. Place meat balls in a casserole dish and fill bottom with about 2 tbsp water (so that the water just covers the bottom of dish).  Bake, covered for 30 minutes
  6. Make sauce by combining all ingredients but cornstarch.  Bring sauce to boil.  Mix cornstarch with 1/4 cup water and add to sauce.  Stir until thick and smooth.
  7. Serve meatballs on a bed of brown rice.  Pour sauce over top of dish.
